The leader of the United Democratic Party ( UDP) and the former vice president of the Gambia, Abubacarr N.M Ousainou Darboe , on the 10th of June 2019 testified at the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparation Commission chaired by Dr. Lamin J. Ceesay that his party won the presidential election in 1996.
Darboe made these revelations as the first witness of the 5th ordinary session of the TRRC sitting.
Lawyer Ousainou Darboe said the UDP is a combination of all the political parties that were banned by the former president Yahya Jammeh and this according to him attracted a lot of supporters throughout the country as at 1996.
He stated that after the voting process, the collation was done at the state house and the votes for the UDP party was given to the APRC and that of APRC to the UDP party. Adding that the then Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) chairman, Gabriel Roberts was taken hostage by the khaki boys and released after the announcement of results.
“Our agents were not allowed into the counting centers and our party representatives were forcibly asked to leave the counting center,” he said
