The ministry of Justice has on Tuesday the 2nd of April 2019 requested the Gambia Police Force to arrest and detain John C.B Mendy a former private soldier of the Gambia Armed Forces and a witness at the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparation Commission (TRRC), after attempting to flee the country to neighboring Casamance (Southern Senegal) through the Giboro border crossing point.
Mr. Mendy who appeared at the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparation commission on the 19th and 20th of March 2019, testified about many events including the November 11, 1994 incident. Based on a totality of the evidence in the possession of the TRRC so far, and in light of the other available evidence in the possession of the TRRC, it was evident that Mr. JCB Mendy was “outrageously dishonest” in his testimony about his role in several incidents of the violence.
The Ministry has recommended the immediate dismissal of Mr.JCB Mendy and requested the cooperation of his employers at the Gambia International Airlines (GIA), in order to encourage truth telling before the TRRC and they strongly discourage any attempts to deliberately conceal the truth in the face of mounting evidence.
The Ministry further stated that the Justice Ministry puts high premium on the importance of the TRRC; that the commission is not set to witch hunt anyone but to establish the truth . The statement from the Ministry also promise to update the public on further developments in the JCB Mendy’s cases as it unfolds.
